Supposedly the reason M-G-M pushed to get a standardized
theater loudspeaker system was that the older systems would not
reproduce Eleanore Powell's taps properly. I can believe it
because there were a variety of systems, all different and often
with bad time delay effects. I think there were other reasons for
the development but M-G-M liked to have some romance attached.
The standard system as developed was named after Douglas Shearer,
the head of the M-G-M sound department and mainly developed by
Jim Lansing. I had a pair of the RCA version but had to sell it.
The system was probably inspired by a very large dual horn built
by Bell Labs for its stereo experiments in the early 1930s. A
couple of these reportedly still exist. They are sometimes called
Fletcher Horns after Harvey Fletcher, the head researcher in
acoustics at the Labs.
The Shearer system was cheaper to build and until the late
1940s was what you heard in most theaters. I miss mine and wish I
had not had to sell them despite being very deaf these days.
