Hello CW crew,
Occasionally I like to share worthwhile things I discover on the
Internets. (Thanks George Bush for correcting my previous singular
"Internet" - now I know it's nets.)
Here is one that is difficult to find, but VERY worthwhile.
I wanted to look up Richard Johnstone, an old SOWP member and OOTC member.
qrz.com is good if there he's still listed.
Also QRZ 1993 data base: https://www.qrz.com/search1993.html
http://hamcall.net
Also their Advanced Search which goes back to 1921,
https://hamcall.net/search
Old Radio Amateur Callbooks - and Department of Commerce Radio Amateur
Callbooks are on the archive.org.
https://archive.org/search.php?query=callbook
Here is where I went for the best information:
http://www.silentkeyhq.com/main.php?p=research.php&dbName=fcc
NOTICE ==> Look over the the RIGHT hand side. It says, N4MC
Unique Call Lookup - that's where you get the most difficult to find
information.
First I went to one of the old timers radio associations - OOTC lists
members dead and members alive.
Dead is the most useful.
http://www.ootc.us/mbrsdead.html
I search that page for Richard "Dick" Johnstone.
I find it: K6FZ 0577 RICHARD JOHNSTONE "Spark Op"
Now I head over to http://www.silentkeyhq.com/main.php?p=research.php&dbName=fcc
1972
K6FZ------RICHARD JOHNSTONE 67 HEATHER WAY, LARKSPUR, CA 94939---
Other tools exist like http://www.ae7q.com/query/
but this one is more suitable for finding a call sign you can ask the
FCC to assign to you as a new vanity call sign to replace your old
KD1JQY call that no one likes.
Save this as a note, I recommend free http://evernote.com for keeping
notes, just "tag" it with #qrz or something and you'll find it again.
