The SM-3 is an interesting machine. It has cushions on each
key. Mine is Cream and Burgandy, very elegant. I find the shift
is hard and will eventually replace the counter springs with
stronger ones. Its in a wedge shaped case made of wood but
painted to look like aluminum.
I have a couple of later Olympia portables, the fanciest is
an SM-9 Deluxe, which has all office machine functions. I got all
of mine at local swap meets. My favorite portable for feel is a
Smith-Corona Silent. This is not a silent machine in the sense
that Remington and Underwood silent machines with special type
movement are but probably a bit less noisy than most. Just in
case aunt Gertrude is sitting up at night typing out her novel.
