[CW] Fake or Real? MGY

I think some wire recorders used super sonic bias which would
have lowered the noise and improved fidelity. I probably have
specs somewhere. However, one problem that was never solved was
the twisting of the wire between recording and playback. This
caused a variation of the high frequencies. Wire recording was
never that popular and didn't compete with tape. It was also very
difficult to edit since splicing was done by tying an square
knot. Worked but not well.
There were a couple of machines that used steel tape. I think
the early BBC recorders did. The first tape recorder I ever saw
was in a roller skating rink in rural Michigan when I was a kid.
Probably c.1947 but I am not sure. Have no idea of the kind. Once
Ampex introduced high quality tape recorders many people began
making them. At first no one could compete with Ampex but after a
while there were several high quality machines available such as
Fairchild and Rangertone. Ranger introduced a stepped drive
capstan and roller to create tension on the tape without
resorting to using the wind motors. Very clever. It took several
years for Ampex et.al. to figure out that scrape flutter was
important and provide rollers to remove it. Well, this is
probably thoroughly off topic.
