Telegraphers would learn the Phillips Code - at first typing down the
letters, looking them up in the book and expanding them for delivery. They
did not have to know the meaning of the code just to relay a message, they
just sent what they received.
This is interesting but this discussion of American Morse code deserves a
better home, like morsecode at mailman.qth.net not the CW list.
