If I am not in the contest and it has a lot of activity, I often go to
the WARC bands for some rag chew QSOs.
I sometimes look for friends in the contest and give them a QSO or two.
If I can easily bring up the software,
I will use it, which will send my side of the exchange, but head copy
and type in their part of the exchange.
If you run across a station running higher speeds, if you listen a bit,
you will see him making QSOs. When his
rate drops, he will drop his speed and his rate will go up. When his
rate drops, he will drop his speed some
more. If his rate does not go up, he will change bands and, typically,
up his speed again and then drop it
down as before.
A contest is about rate & multipliers. If you are in there to win, you
go as fast as it productive and move to
where you make make QSOs as fast as you can.
As far as CW machine use, sending is less fatiguing with no errors.
Receiving is best done by the ears and
your brain that you have trained. Those who actually believe high speed
CW contesting uses machine copy
are just no knowledgeable about contesting. Oh, I am sure there are
those who are not proficient with CW
that try using these CW copying "machines," but I doubt they would sing
their praise. Those copying the
high speed CW are using their ears & brains. Jealous ? Practice and
practice and. then. practice some more.
Challenge yourself with speeds above your comfort zone. For casual rag
chews, relax and quit worrying
about 100% copy. Once you get o word copy, your brain should make
automatic fills. Do you hear every
word during spoken communications? Your brain makes fills in spoken
communications and it will in CW.
