Ron,
FCC took the bottom 25 kHz which is prime DX area away from General
licenses in 1968.
So your reason to work DX on the low end of the HF bands WAS the incentive!
That's why I upgraded from General to EXTRA in 1967. I disliked the
cutting up of the bands and creating ghettos of license classes. I thought
Novice bands were a good idea, new Morse operators, crystal controlled with
75 watts input power.
Being a Novice with the big N in your callsign was bad enough!
