    That is my understanding and memory of what commercial 
traffic I copied (reading the mail) long ago. I understood that 
the signals were procedural instructions, not to be included in 
the written text.
     The Marine Radio Manual shows example of what was 
transmitted and what was written. Similar material is in other 
books such as Sterling's Radio Manual (older editions) and Mary 
Texana loomis's book. Obviously there were many changes in 
procedures during the ten year period between these books and 
actual procedure may have differed significantly from what was 
shown in the texts.
    BTW, its interesting to me how much interest this thread has 
generated here and a similar thread in the SKCC list.
