As far as I remember French was a very important language in the past 
1900-1950. In primary school they started teaching French (not English) 
to children 10 years old in the Netherlands, "papa fume une pipe"

When you had for transfer of money a postal international check, it was 
printed in local language AND in French. Airmail was 'par avion'.

But in the period of Nazi Deutschland  and leader A.Hitler, there was 
German language purism and German words were created in order to prevent 
influence of other languages.

Probably german hams reading this forum can clear up your further 
questions.

Nowadays there are a lot of foreign words used in Germany, the natural 
way a language develops.
