Much like you guys on the seas, in much of the rest of the world there was a lack of up-to-date news for our military, and state department, etc. employees,  
Especially in English.  Being in embassies, consulates, and even government communications relay sites, we depended on those commercial tty circuits as well.  Back then, we were using 6 ply paper, with carbon sheets between them.  It was not a real duty, but much appreciated by the folks outside the commo shacks, for us to pass copies amongst the rest of the people.

I almost got in real trouble, back when in the army, and pulled off several pages, and noticed an article that had gone out of sync, and was partly garbled.  The beginning of it was a "flash" type headline, saying something about Russia, and them dropping bombs on US    ........79709709779  garbled garble%^&*()())_))(*U. It certainly got my attention, and I showed it to my watch officer, who took it, and ran.     I Got the circuit back in later, and of course, no mention. 
   What I didn't know, is the WO took it in to his office, called the base commander, and they relayed it on as a CRITICAL message.   Imagine when the White house duty officer, saw it, and woke IKE up.   
Before I got back on duty a few hours later, two technicians had been queried, and said they were working on the printer earlier, and had typed that in as a joke.  They were already on a plane, headed back to the US. Man, I am glad they confessed.
