Ron,
Just like you (and me) someone had to tell us. Or we figured it out on our
own - it's easier to figure out with no AGC and static crashes like on ship
watching 500 kHz.
Many of our receivers had no AGC - at least the old ones. 3/4 audio gain,
and back down on radio frequency gain until you "just" hear background
noise.
