    There is a brief article on the origin of the Phillips code 
and the Western Union 92 code at:

  The familiar 73 and 88 are from the WU code and date from 1859. 
The Phillips code is much more extensive. An excerpt is at:

    I thought I had the Vibroplex edition in my files but can't 
find it. The only source from Google is a broken link. I also 
checked Archive.org with no success but someone else may do 
better. Vibroplex sold editions of the Phillips code up to the 
1950s some time.
