Speaking of old keys with ship callsigns scratched on them, I have a 1920 Vibroplex Original with an amazing history scratched on the bottom. I started to write an article about it a few years ago but got sidetracked by work half way through. I’ve been able to trace all the ship’s callsigns, included images and a bit of history of each. The highlight inscription though, is not a ship at all. It’s “GMD”, the callsign used by the 1926 Dyott-Roosevelt Expedition down the Amazon’s ‘River of Doubt’. This well documented scientific expedition retraced Theodore Roosevelt’s 1914 expedition down the uncharted ‘River of Doubt’ to confirm his findings.
Have a look at the key here: http://n6ev.com/key-collection/bugs/river-of-doubt-bug
And the half-finished article here: http://n6ev.com/dyott/The_Story_DRAFT.pdf
As you will see by the references at the end of the article, I’ve collected a ton of documentation. In addition, I need to obtain a complete set of copies of the Dyott Expedition photos from the Library of Congress. When things settle after retirement in a couple months, I hope to return to this project and finish the article (publication TBD).
I hope you enjoy the journey of discovery about this bug as much as I have.
