I prefer headphones for the following reasons, in order of importance.
1) Eliminates multipath propagation from speaker to ears. (You might
call this reverberation)
2) Reduces local environmental noise.
The sound bouncing around in the room and arriving at my ears at
multiple time delays is much more bothersome to me than external noise.
Maybe if my shack walls were covered with acoustic absorbent foam a
speaker would be alright.
I find that I prefer headphones that do not fully block out external
noise. Only in really difficult conditions do I like to use full ear
covering outside noise blocking phones.
And since this thread has already diverged into a discussion about
bandpass filters, I don't like narrow filters. I prefer to hear other
stuff going on around me. Both on the band I am operating on and in the
house. My mind is really good at focusing on the signal I want to hear.
When using a narrow filter, with sharp skirts, leaving only the signal I
am interested in, it seems sort of sterile (for lack of a better word)
to me. I enjoy hearing other stuff going on on the band. And I guess I
don't like NOT being able to hear stuff that might be going on in and
around my house.
Acoustical resonators are a low tech way to accentuate the tone you want
to listen to, without completely removing the ambiance of the band.
