One quote in the article struck me:
“The most significant thing is the speed of communications these days,” said Comerford.
Really - Is the communications to/from a ship in distress faster today? The rest of the article seemed to be about how New Zealand is better-prepared to *respond* to a maritime crisis but I'm not convinced the communications is faster. I wasn't a professional in that field, but I've never thought that it was an improvement to do without radiomen and a flexible communications station on-board that can be used for any purpose (contacting shore stations and other ships).
Cheaper, yes... but faster?
