Sounds like he is using something like my old groupings, starting with the first group, E T A I O N S. It is surprising just how many words you can send, using just those few letters. Probably 70 percent of English words uses one or more of those letters. Just the first three letters, I send to my students show their uses: EAT ATE, TEA, , then send 4 more and you have dozens of words available, if you take the time to work them all out. I used this method at the National Scout Jamboree in 85, and every student learned the whole alphabet, at 18 wpm in 3 days. (1 hour in the morning and 1 in the afternoon, and students could attend either or both sessions). I sent with a hand key (sitting under a tree near the ham tent) Dits and Dahs at 18 wpm, and the spaces at 5 wpm. When they start picking up on the letters (copy by pen and pad) I just decreased the length of the spaces between characters. Its fun. Everyone who knows the code should give it a try with a small group.
