Not entirely.  At our high school electronics club meeting last night, 
we had two kids learning Morse. At least two others have built 
oscillators and are practicing at home. And by built I mean yes, with a 
soldering iron.

So it isn't entirely a secret reserved for us old fogies. A little 
elmering, make it fun, and the kids drive right in.
