This is an interesting article. I have one observation, however. The days of straight keying are long over in 2017. That's a stage which beginners don't need to visit at all. Almost any modern transceiver has a built-in keyer. If you're using an old rig without an internal CW keyer, you can build an inexpensive external one very easily: http://www.hamgadgets.com/ULTRA-PICOKEYER.

Want to buy it assembled? Radio Dan can help you out. He offers Ultra PicoKeyer and ID-O-Matic kits assembled and tested, complete with cables if you want.

For beginners, I'd suggest using a single-lever paddle, although a dual-lever one can also be used in slap fashion, and the operator could then experiment with iambic and dit-insertion and dah-insertion techniques if desired.
