In the old days, yes.  High current cathode keying would burn off any 
crud/dirt.  Now days, any oils left even from printing can cause
contact contamination, thus dirt attraction.  I used that years ago, but 
not today.  I am an old timer now, i guess, 60 years licensed.
And I can feel my 74 years of aging now.
