Oh, yes. A squirt of light weight oil made the ink last quite a while
longer. We had M28 LPRs and M14 printer/perforators in the 55 centers.
Just found out one of my Plan 55 buddies passed away last November.
There were about 10 of us that went through most of our four years
in the Air Force together. Our numbers are getting thinner lately.
Andrews was the eastern gateway for USAF TTY and we had many
bases/circuits there. I was there 1962 to 1965. Lenny, W3GRF, was our
station CHOP.
Being there, I ended up going to Bolling AFB, Pentagon (WAR, AIR) and
some Army facilities. Great experience for 3 years. I have/had some
very good friends
over the years in the comm fields with DOD, State Department, etc.
Great way to travel the world and get paid for it, with a few
exceptions. Because I had
a military drivers license, I often got tagged to drive a radi tech to
service microwave, etc. at the Pentagon. I would hang out at the MARS
HQ or at WAR/AIR.
Being a TTY guy, they often recruited me to fix their TTY gear and their
CW tape reader for CW bulletins. ☺ Of course, eating lunch down on the
concourse
in the summer was rough duty with the female to men ratio in DC so
high. It would take half an hour for my eyeballs to get right after lunch.
