Yes, David, my new GHD is actually easier and more comfortable to send
with than the reincarnated Frattini Dyna-Maniflex and the finish is just
as good. I've been on 30 meters for a few hours having some nice
ragchews today. Both Frattini and GHD apparently put as much effort
into finishing the key on the top AND THE BOTTOM whereas Piero Begali
pretty much leaves the unseen areas somewhat rough. My personal
impression of these two masters is that if you want the best
"traditional design" with spectacular finish you buy Frattini; if you
want Italian art and/or progressive thinking (Begali bug and 'swiper)
you buy Begali. And yes, if offered a Begali Swing I would gratefully
accept it because it's just the most incredible, fantastic sideswiper
I've ever had the pleasure of using (for two few months!). But this GHD
is right up there with it in my opinion and at 1/3rd the price it was a
no-brainer for me.
Funny you should mention the 8 dit thing...I was messing around this
morning with my 70s era Vibroplex presentation and yes, after about 8 to
10 GOOD dits, it got sloppy. Wish I'd seen your email comment earlier.
Would have saved me a lot of frustration this a.m. trying to "fix" the
"problem." I was trying to get it to go from the last good dit to
steady state without first going through a couple of fuzzy, bad dits. I
even stuffed differing amounst of foam in the U spring thinking that
might be part of the problem with the scratchy dits, I've tried a 1 uf
cap I have a "dot stabilizer" also but that doesn't work either. The
contacts are like new. It must be something mechanical I don't
understand that occurs near the end of the dit string. Probably not
solvable. Not really an operating issue; just something that bothers me
that I wish I could fix.

GHD keys are beautifully finished. I have a Frattini J-36
semi-automatic key, and it is able to send 200 dots when I'm sending 10
dots a second (a speed of 24 wpm), I can send dots for 20 seconds.
That's amazing. I have some Vibroplex keys that i can just manage to
get 10 good dots out of -- which is sufficient as you only need eight
dots - the ERROR signal - in Morse code.
Mr. Frattini, I1QOD is a master Morse operator, he's a member of all the
super fast Morse clubs HSC #1568, VHSC #360, SHSC #155, EHSC #95 - EHSC
requires a 30 minute contact at a minimum of 60 wpm Morse speed.
He's fast and makes great keys.
Here's an interesting article on radiotelegraphy by Morse.

I guess what you're saying is that the GHD key you just received is
quieter than the Frattini key and that it's easier to send with having a
shorter throw and seems less stiff.
And compared to the Begali key, it's a great key, perhaps not as good as
that key, but considering the price, it's a much better buy and better
(wiser) spent money.
I think if someone offered you a Begali, you would take it and use it
along side your new GHD key.
I don't blame you for that.
Congratulations on the new key.
