It appears that most people do not have any local helper/teacher when it comes to new hams. We all had those questions at one time or the other (well maybe not about spark-gap) and had to learn. One of the problems I am seeing the last few days is people not knowing what a particular Q signal means. I blame that on the fact that CW is no longer required and that is where most of us learned the Q codes, and even Z codes. People are simply not talking (ham radio speak). I missed the "Sent from my 1917 Spark Gap Transmitter" signature, but had to chuckle when I finally saw it. When someone jumps right into ham radio, on a digital mode such as those covered under wsjt software, they are missing out on the knowledge of past ham radio education, and when we answer questions with some years of past knowledge, they just dont have the background to understand, so we have to be careful how we respond. People talk about QRM, and the explanation is "inteference" but that is not exactly correct. Its Manmade interference. So we need to insure they also know what QRN , for NATURAL interference means. QSB was another recently asked question. So it behooves the newbies (as well as some of us oldies) to study up on the Q signal lists. Hey, as a long-time short wave listener, then ham radio, then government service telecommunications there are also Z signals that some of us still use. In the Boy Scouts, some of the "Scout Law" is: A Scout is : helpful, friendly, courteous. Gotta keep that in mind when dealing with our fellow hams too.
