[CW] ARRL Request to Contact Your US Senators Supporting S 1534 - the Amateur Radio Parity Act

Don:

You under-sold N3JT’s qualifications. From the description at the bottom of the first article is this:

“Jim Talens, N3JT, is a telecom attorney who spent 22 years at the FCC, 5 years at a large law firm in DC and still does some consulting. He is an engineer, MBA and attorney. Opinions expressed do not necessarily reflect the opinions of CWops."

That tells me a lot more than he is “just a lawyer.” He is an experienced lawyer in this particular subject AND he has a vested interest in the hobby. The second article is also by a lawyer-radio operator but I know nothing more than that.

Me? I don’t have squat with regards to legal qualifications for an opinion on this subject, one way or the other. At best I am left with relying upon people that I trust and people that I think I can trust. N3JT is the latter based upon his excellent qualifications. My buddy Bob, who provided to me the initial announcement, is the former because I know him personally.

Here is what now strikes me as annoying: The official ARRL website (http://www.arrl.org <http://www.arrl.org/>) is, in fact, calling for support to this legislation. Conversely, guys like N3JT and K1VR each present great arguments otherwise. I am inclined to trust N3JT and K1VR because of their qualifications. If I do that, though, then I have to ask myself this: Why has the ARRL compromised and left the amateur radio community with the short end of the stick? Why would they do that? I am annoyed that I am now questioning the interests of an otherwise revered organization.

The result? In the confusion as to who is right, I (and I suppose many others) have decided to neither support or oppose the legislation. In so doing, I (again, and many others) will deny the ARRL’s request for its grassroots support. Thus, I (and many others) have deliberately decided to stymie the same organization that otherwise champions my hobby. That makes me a hypocrite, right?

I hope that smarter, more learned people than me make the right decision in this case.

In fact it could be counter-productive and worsen our situation, leading to a classic case of "government over-reach", in this case getting federal regulators (the FCC) involved in the enforcement of "neighborhood associations" rules. This whole thing should be revised, or thrown out completely and re-written, along the lines of the pre-watered down version that paralleled PRB-1.
