David William Goodwin VE7DWG of Aldergrove, British
Columbia left us and his beloved dog Princess on 2016-03-19. He was found the
next day in his humble abode. He would not want us to blow his horn, but he was
such a consummate CW operator, we really have to do so. The ionosphere
surrounding planet Earth no longer echoes Dave’s beautiful dits and dahs. If an
operator sent with a straight key, Dave would answer at the same speed with a
straight key. If somebody sent with a bug, Dave would reply with his trusty
Vibroplex semiautomatic key. If the other operator used a paddle and electronic
keyer, Dave would reciprocate. I tried to nominate Dave for the CW Operators’
Club, but he declined the honor.


Dave regularly checked into CW traffic nets, and he was a
loyal member of the daily 0900 Pacific Time 7034 kHz Pacific Amateur Radio
Guild net.

Dave Goodwin was generous. I once gave him a Begali Simplex
Mono paddle. He reciprocated by gifting me his more valuable Johnson Matchbox. When
he knew that the end was near, Dave also gave me a handitalkie.


Dave was never reluctant to praise the Lord or to
celebrate his sobriety in public. I tried for years to help him move away from tobacco,
but like many people long acquainted with alcohol, he never succeeded in taking
that next step.


As we continue to enjoy warming the sky with our Amateur
Radio conversations, we will dearly miss Dave’s wry jokes.
