[CW] OT: Heartbreaking VOA Sterba Curtain Destruction

Been there done that, at 76 (almost) now. Ive seen the best and the worst of it now. I couldnt have handled one of those 200-400 foot things, but maybe a 40 ft one, as long as it wasnt too big across. In fact, the "tower" I have now, came off the top of one of the buildings at our transmitter site. The techs were out, about to drop severql of them, and I spoke up, saying please please please dont just drop it, lean it gently. And I got four sections of the smallest tower that was up there, plus a tilt over mast holder, and a top piece that has the rotator mount on it. Its been with me for almost 30 years, and the th3jr on top of it, has been with me from Venezuela, to England and back here, since 1975. So, I get the best out of them, I can. But, yes, to lose the VOA that we all listened to, from childhood onward, it is very sad. As an SWL in junior high, and then on to hamming, I depended on it a lot, when lived overseas, to get stateside and world news. Wasnt much of that available in my two tours in Ethiopia. HI.

Very true; I don't think anyone here would argue that point. All of us are moving to a state of entropy. At least the materials can be reused in this case.
My take was more of how I mourn the reasons behind VOA's (and ostensively America's) withdrawal from presenting the ideas and concepts that made us both good and great. Dropping these towers/antennas are but a symbol. If there were ever a time when the world needed a standard bearer, one only needs to look at how much the various nefarious forces have grown; now would be a good time. I can't speak to how we have gone about that in the last few decades because I have been a part (albeit a small part) as a professional soldier. So I long for some renewal and possibly some redemption, unfortunately do not see these returning anytime soon. I cannot fathom how those here whom are older than me (49 shortly) experienced the change of our complete culture.
Completely agree with your statement though.
