Hi DR…
I got out the logbooks I kept from WKR Nome and looked for 10/4/1980.
Operator MP Ward was on 600 meter watch during our open hours
on that day from 031600Z until 040300Z and didn’t log anything except the
normal silent period observations.
We were directed by Company to go to winter hours that day, which meant
that we no longer kept the entire scheduled 8 hours on 600 meter watch at
WKR.
We never officially kept the 600 meter watch 24/7 at that station, although
we always
kept the receivers turned up so we could listen all the time we were in the
station doing other things.
We were employed there as traveling bush technicians as well as radio
operators.
During the regular shipping season May-October before the ice came in, we
manned the station and the 600 meter watch 8a-5p local Nome time. At that
time there were two of us qualified CW Morse operators on the staff, and
one or the other of us was on watch every day.
I had to leave the station on a bush trip to some village early
afternoon on 10/4/1980.
The log shows I was on 600 meter watch only from 041900Z until 042000Z on
the day the Prinsendam got into trouble, so we missed out on hearing all
the action.
NOJ always had a huge signal on 600 meters at Nome…I’m sure we would have
logged anything heard regarding the incident if one or the other of us had
been on duty.
Listening to the recording takes me back to those days…
