Thinking of 35 years ago today, I was leaving Valdez, Alaska, headed "PRO
CAPE HORN" - for a long trip in VLCC "WILLIAMSBURGH/WGOA" when the ship's
Auto Alarm rang. Seems this ship was on fire with 535 passengers and crew
and wanted someone to help them. James N. Pfister, NS1L was Chief R/O - U.S.
Merchant Marine Radio Electronics Officer

I was an Observing Radio Officer - I was fully qualified but needed six
months on a cargo ship to sail alone. What a day - I sent out three DDD SOS
DDD calls when MS Prinsendam (1973)
<https://www.facebook.com/pages/MS-Prinsendam-1973/124574844253979> Chief
R/O Jack van der Zee asked me to take over communications for him as he had
lost all mains power and was on battery power. With the help of US and
Foreign Merchant Marines, Canadian Armed Forces, US Air Force, RCA,
ITT/Mackay, Alascom and US Coast Guard, International Co-Operation produced
a miracle on the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi who loved nature:
"Brother Son, Sister Moon".
