The neatest thing that I have run across in a while is the way I can
turn on cw in my FT-857D while in any other mode. During a net two or
three weeks ago the net control operator (on 50.2 MHz) couldn't make out
what I was saying (over about 9 air miles) so I turned on the QSK
function es I told him using cw, he also thought it was neat es he was
surprised how easily he could copy me when the SSB (what ever that is)
couldn't get through the city's noise.
Legally it's still just CW.
I was a kid trying to learn the code, while AM was king, before there
was SSB (what ever that is) on the air, the heterodynes from AM
operations were maddening for everyone, OMs would tune up for a SKED in
what seemed to be a clear spot es when he transmitted, his chum had to
tell him "it is no good, a 2 kc beat is burning a hole through my brain."
It was plain awful once the band became active. (folks started
getting home from work) HAMs of today have no idea what an awful mess
it was to have all of those carries all over the place. FM es SSB (what
ever that is) has successfully cured that bane of HAM-dom.
BTW: When SSB took over, all HAM signals disappeared from my console
am+SW radio es I had no idea why.
Also: Every CW operator need a good desk mic on a stand, that's where
you hang your cans when the copy is Q5.
