Danny,

A translation error.

Immaterial also means "not consisting of matter *:*  incorporeal
<http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/incorporeal>"

So Incorporeal might be a better word.

I remember in philosophy there was a classification of being which was
non-physical.  Oh, intangible, I think that's it.

Intangible, incorporeal. Not physical.

That's the meaning.

Historic preservation for something intangible.

Congrats to those in Europe who have taken upon themselves for preserving
our heritage.
