I was copying KPH on 8642 last night. Quite strong
here. I heard both a wheel with several calls and what I
identify as KPH by frequency sending stories of sailing.
Some sounded hand sent. Copied until my ears started
ringing. This was about 11PM local time, maybe later. Also
heard a brief wheel from a USGS station but didn't write
down the call. The receivers were an RCA AR-88F on a
makeshift antenna, just a wire over the rafters of my garage
shack. Also copied in the house using a Collins R-388 on
another makeshift antenna.
Very goose bump producing to hear these old calls again
after many years. I used to practice code by copying press
from KPH and KFS or from WCC and WSL. All came booming in at
practically any hour on some frequency. I even heard press
from WNU a couple of times, _hand sent_ between traffic! I
also heard WLO last night with a wheel. Also quite strong.
I had some difficulty earlier in the evening due to local
noise but that goes away later. Not sure what produces it
but its something that gets turned on about dark and runs
for several hours, maybe a sign.
