I believe you said it correctly. With a phone signal, you cover 2,5 kHz,
each one of the phone signals.
Of course, if a CW signal would be in there, a good, competent phone
operator could use a notch and
eliminate a narrow CW signal.
Unfortunately, a phone signal covers over 2.5 kHz. If a CW operator has
a very narrow filter, he can
eliminate signals off to both sides of where he is listening, but some
of the phone signal is still in his
narrow band width.
So, the fact is, phone is not as efficient, but it has enough room as it
is. The phone band has been
expended several times, at the sacrifice of the CW bands. With the
increase in CW activity by
operators fed up with poor phone activities, I believe some people are
just not in touch with activity
on the bands.
