Ken,
It's hard to say. If the intent was only to use it very occasionally,
a long character would be fine. For example, the second code proposed
by David Ring:
STARTING SIGNAL: DAH-DI-DAH-DI-DAH
If there was an expectation of a lot of use in some contexts, I would
look for a shorter character. A good candidate is the is the other one
David Ring suggested:
UNDERSTOOD: DI-DI-DI-DAH-DIT.
Note that both these codes are International standard symbols that are
not currently used by hams. They would also have the advantage that
they should not be used in other accented or non-English extensions.
If the intent is only to use this code for the occasional single
punctuation, a shift code for a single character should suffice. If
you wanted to yell a lot, maybe a Caps-Lock would be needed.
It may not sound like there is much use for shift and upper case, but
you know there was an April Fools posting about Google providing a
morse keyboard for cell phones. It got me thinking that maybe there
would be a future for that with hams. And of course, you couldn't have
morse texting without morse emoticons ;-).
