I'm surprised that no one mentioned the Vibroplex Vari-Speed 
accessory. I installed one of these on my 1954 "standard" 
and can change speed in a second or two. The only difference 
from Benny's mod is that the Vari-speed vertical arm can 
rotate front to back for a quick speed adjustment. Vibroplex 
has a nice video on their website about this unit.

    I am sure I've seen ads for something similar going back 
to the 1930s maybe before. Clamps on the bug pendulum and 
has an extension rod that tilts so you can extend the 
pendulum.
    The think I couldn't remember before is called a _stair 
gauge_ and can be found in any decent hardware store. They 
will clamp on either round or flat pendulums. Not expensive.
