I'm surprised that no one mentioned the Vibroplex Vari-Speed accessory. I installed one of these on my 1954 "standard" and can change speed in a second or two. The only difference from Benny's mod is that the Vari-speed vertical arm can rotate front to back for a quick speed adjustment. Vibroplex has a nice video on their website about this unit.
