It has been awhile, my friend.  Do you have the manual for the FT-897D?  
I am looking at
a PDF copy of it and on page 18, it shows that the CAT/Linear jack 
provides keying for
a linear.  Also, menu mode 20 sets the CAT to CAT/Linear/Tuner.  I can 
send you the
whole PDF manual.  2,917 kb in size.
