That is where I got mine, in 59. I could copy Novice speed before that,
from having to learn it as a 1st class Boy Scout. I typed in high
school (went to state championship). So, since I could type, I didnt
get the 4 Hours of typing, having passed their requirement the first 10
minutes of the first day. That meant - I had CW 6 hours a day. Yuk.
They finally reneged, and let me fool around with other things a couple
hours, after I passed 30. At the end of the 6 months, I was copying 38
or 40, but don't exactly remember. I know I was number two in the class
of 138, and got to pick my overseas assignment out of about 6 choices.
I therefore wound up in Asmara, Ethiopia, because the other choices were
even worse weather. (The guy that beat me out was also a ham, many
years before me and think he had his general, but I beat him in speed-
he knew more about antennas and other stuff they sorta tried to teach
us) Got overseas, and a year later I was setting on a circuit that ran
an estimated 50 wpm, but I and another guy switched off on the position
every 15 minutes, or our minds just went blank. They didnt want
mistakes. HI

7 Years later, as a civilian communications officer, my first
assignment was----- thats right ASMARA!!! For that job, I had to pass
32, hehe, and was the fastest to ever go thru the class, with 42 wpm
which was the fastest tape they had. Copying with a MILL ruined my
regular typing, and I cant remember one word behind, so no copy by ear
at all - without at least keeping notes by pencil.
