If you want to learn CW ... and increase your speed ...
... lock your mike in a trunk in the cellar and give the key to your wife to hide some where ...
Look at who are the accomplished CW operators ..... they are the YCCC top CW contest scorers .....
Get in every CW contest in the coming year .... spend a lot of time in the chair ...

CW should be learned just like your native language. You spent several years learning to understand it by sound then you started to recognize the symbols that represented those sounds. People try to learn CW in the reverse order. That could cause problems.

Hans-
Yes, this is a novel approach, and you probably could learn the morse characters this way. However, you might find that this method seriously limits your ability to increase your morse code receiving speed. This is because any time you introduce "dits" and "dahs" into the recognition process (either visually or otherwise) you have slowed the total morse character recognition time. It could be very difficult to overcome this impediment.
The accepted practice is to learn by hearing each morse character as a complete sound rather than individual "dits" and "dahs". This way, when you hear the morse character sound, you either write it down or at least recognize it immediately if copying mentally. There are several computer programs that teach morse code character recognition by sound, one of which is "G4FON".
