This kind of graph is probably almost as old as the Code itself,
and in my opinion it was never really intended to be a teaching
aid, but something to illustrate the concept of Morse Code.

The earliest reference I could find right now is in the "Signalbuch
für den Kurzwellenverkehr" (Signal book for high frequency
communication) from Fuchs-Fasching (Vienna), 4th ed., 1936.

It features this chart which is drawn a little different with actual
dots and dashes along the branches, titled "Morse-Alphabet in
graphischer Darstellung" (Graphical representation of Morse code).

In the following section, "Wie soll man Morsen lernen?" (How to learn
Morse code?), however, the old wisdom of learning the code only
by listening to it, and avoiding all other representations, is given.
