Sorry to hear of Rod's passing and my sympathy to all who knew him.

In addition to that I was also glad to see in print finally a history of 
the use of the term "Elmer." I never heard that terminology as a Novice, 
and now I see why, it having been coined by Rod in the '70s. There has 
developed around that term an incorrect myth that it has been around 
since the beginning of amateur radio.
