I was reminded today of a dear friend of mine, FRO Francis Allen Chapman
who lived nearby in Hadley, Massachusetts. He had an amateur radio call
sign of NR1X and I don't remember how I heard about him first, but I
believe it was through the VWOA - Veteran Wireless Operators
Association<http://www.vwoa.org>or perhaps the SOWP
- Society of Wireless Pioneers <http://www.sowp.org>, although the SOWP has
been nearly dead for 20 years or so but has been brought back to life
thanks to the efforts of Bart Lee of this list and others who worked both
within and without the SOWP who although greatly instrumental in
the renascence will remain for further historians to recognize. I do not
belong to SOWP sister organization SOAP - Society of Airline
Pioneers<http://www.airwaypioneers.com/default.htm>but I know Frank
did.

FRO Frank Allen Chapman about radio and the flying clippers which is
marvelous to read for those who rightly remember the era of the clipper
ships which revolutionized foreign transportation of passengers and mail
http://www.flyingclippers.com/postflight/6891-7.html

I have for some years tried unsuccessfully to obtain Morse recordings of
air-to-ground communications, and I've even asked the few remaining FRO's
that subscribe to this list if somehow they could re-enact a bit of what
went on - one remarking that he often sent air ticket confirmations by
Morse!

A good read and recommended.
