[CW] How to get proficient in morse?

Danny,
Yes the Army way worked. but it was the Army. I could copy about 18 wpm
when I started in the Army school ( had my ticket before the Army) but
could not type. I think they would only let you copy 15 with a pencil then
you had to take typing classes on the mill ( and the keys were blank) I
think I was copying 30 wpm at the end of school but it was the typing not
the code. You had to copy 3 minutes no errors to proceed to the next level.
Many times I would get 2 plus minutes and hit two keys and jam up the mill.
I never through a mill on the floor but I did see some do it. Spent the
rest of my army career (3 years) coping Cubans and Russians in south
Florida.

I would have recommended the first. I copied code as I went into the army,
through Scouting, but somewhat slowly. In 6 months of communications
training, US Army style, I could copy and by this I mean COPY or type on
paper) 40 plus wpm. What I am not hearing here is that meaning for "copy".
Just floating along and being able to understand what is being said, is not
copying code. My problem is that I MUST copy it, to read and understand it.
Short term memory allows me, at the most, about a word or two, and then I
forget what I heard. In hamming, I simply write down names, qth, rigs, etc.
without all of the other stuff in between. I can (or at least could) copy
solid MILL Grade code at 50 wpm, but rmembering what I wrote down? NO way!

Hi Mike,
I spent 3 years (many years ago) as a radio operator (copying CW only) in
the Army. Also spent about 10 years on ham radio CW traffic nets and over
25 years CW contesting. I would recommend the last two. I would not
recommend the first one ;o). Stick with it, it is worth the effort.
Good luck

Hi,
This is probably a question that pops from time to time. I had been learning
morse code a while ago using the Koch method. I was able to reliably copy
code at decent speed, but making a transition in copying real QSO's seems a
transition is seems hard.
I read various articles about the do's and don'ts and various learning
techniques.
I seem to be able to stuck however, when I am trying to copy a real QSO the
brain goes in overload. Not even mentioning sending code.
What helped you learn this? I realize not everyone learns the same, but I'd
like to get some of the collective wisdom of this group.
I also have a feeling having a practice buddy may help. Is there a system
for this, ideally through the internet?
I have to note I have limited time available. Maybe this is the core of the
problem, but if there is a way to get there gradually, I'd love to know.
Thanks,
Michiel W7MJW
