Michiel .... there is no short cut to learning CW ... or how to play the piano ... or learning calculus ..

It requires "Chair" time ... remove the mike from your rig and lock it up in a box in the cellar ...

If you know all the letters and numbers ... you can copy 5 WPM .... that is enough to start making QSOs ...
Get on the bands and call CQ ...at 5 WPM ... Listening to tapes can help but it not like being on the air in actual QSOs ...

WHICH IS WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING IN THE FUTURE.... HAVING ACTUAL QSOs ....

Try the 40 meter and other CW QRP frequencies... 7030 ... 7040 ..... http://www.smeter.net/spectrum/amateur-qrp.php
You will find the code speeds slower there .... Answer CQs at first ....

Get on for every CW contest ... sure the speeds are fast ... but you can watch the DX Summit and get help with the calls ..
Operate in the higher part of the bands where the CW is slower ...... http://www.goldtel.net/aa1v/

The new hams that we know who progressed the fastest started with an electronic keyer of some type ..Not a hand key....
Even when you practice sending it is programming your brain .... Use a tape recorder to record and play back
your CW and your QSOs ... it can be a humbling experience at times ....

Keep at it until you get comfortable with calling CQ and having a QSO .... say 15 WPM ...you will NOT attain this speed in 2 weeks ..

Only then get the mike and attach it to the rig ... But if you do get proficient with the CW ...

You may not want to work much phone again ...

Subject: [CW] How to get proficient in morse?

  Hi,

This is probably a question that pops from time to time. I had been learning morse code a while ago using the Koch method. I was able to reliably copy code at decent speed, but making a transition in copying real QSO’s seems a transition is seems hard.

I read various articles about the do’s and don’ts and various learning techniques.

I seem to be able to stuck however, when I am trying to copy a real QSO the brain goes in overload. Not even mentioning sending code.

What helped you learn this? I realize not everyone learns the same, but I’d like to get some of the collective wisdom of this group.

I also have a feeling having a practice buddy may help. Is there a system for this, ideally through the internet?

I have to note I have limited time available. Maybe this is the core of the problem, but if there is a way to get there gradually, I’d love to know.

  Thanks,
  Michiel W7MJW
