I, myself, sponsored a Romanian kid last year because he didn't have the money to attend.
For a Ham Manufacture, it is a great way for a company to get their name out there. It is no different than paying for print advertisement when a competitor is wearing their logo on their shirt.
Your reply should include your call sign so that I can see if I am speaking to a guy that can send and receive more than 13wpm.
