A2 is MCW. Ship and shore MCW was a modulate AND keyed carrier - in BFO
mode it produced three tones - lower side band, carrier, upper sideband.
I cannot answer your other questions - most likely the instability is due
to the receiver. Also I have noticed that the operator tuned the receiver
which would vary both the carrier and the sidebands (audio). Usually the
audio frequency was very stable.
