The science is starting to catch up with that cartoon. I run a beacon on 600 meters sometimes and there is a 1 inch by 1-1/2 inch board powered by an aspirin battery the substitutes for the key. the board doesit all and could be set to CQ.

Remember the QST cartoon where the op is staring at a straight key calling CQ on its own ?
(My own keys just stare back at me.)

I have a navy sparkproof, purchased ex-military, plus no one knows how many hams, back in 67, and it still works just as the day I purchased it. Been thru a lot of dits and dahs, but havent used it much, other than teaching, for the past 15 years.

In all my days, I don't think I have ever seen any type of key or paddle that was literally worn out.
We have all seen physical damage by dropping, especially broken plastic parts.
That kind of abuse doesn't count.
Has anyone ever had to retire a key due to long use?
I'm still trying to wear out mine!
My two long-time favorites are basic:
Navy Sparkproofs with their black mushroom knobs and the basic Ameco K-4 with shorting bar.
I would be very curious to hear your stories.
Many thanks, Karl Zuk N2KZ
