[CW] Morse Training

I learned Morse from an old Zenith farm radio and my Mom. Mom was a ham in the late 20's/early 30'a as a teen, but didn't renew her license when she got married.

On the farm we had a Zenith 6 or 7 band radio, battery powered (no commercial or REA power in the 40's). Other than listening to the 5pm news from WDAY and Dragnet on Thursdays at 8PM, the radio didn't get much use, so I'd often tune to those "other bands". The beeps and boops I heard were interesting.... Mom said they were ships mostly, but also showed me where the hams were. She helped me learn Morse, and I spent many evening eavesdropping on the ships, but found the hams mostly pretty boring. Copied mostly in my head.

Later the Navy made a Radioman out of me because I knew Morse, but learning to copy "hard copy" on a typewriter was a completely different skill, and having learned Morse as a kid was really of no use whatsoever in that. In fact, it was probably a hindrance, as "head copy" tended to interfere with typing it on a mill.
