I think this truly is a "different strokes for different folks" issue. Some
people (e.g., my wife, W5DNA) have serious hearing deficits in the 400 Hz
to 1 KHz range, which is right where most CPOs and exam recordings have
their tones. She needs the tone to be up around 1400 Hz to have a chance of
copying CW. I, on the other hand, am much more comfy with the tone between
400 Hz and 800 Hz.
