That's how I started and then increased the effective speed. You  
really need a mentor (elmer) too.
After a while I found Chuck Adams's, K7QO, Code Course (his web site http://www.k7qo.net/) 
  suited me better.
The course is in mp3 files and a pdf and downloadable from http://www.kkn.net/~k7qo/ 
  .

I seem to have got on quite will with that.
Hope your starting with a straight key too, some would disagree, but  
I'm told it's the best way to get started.
