Hi David,

I may have jumped too quickly! I saw your initial E Mail about paying the $12 bucks to become a charter member of CWOPS. Then I sent the money via Paypal (Master Card). If there is a problem, I'll go
and stand in the corner?

I just checked - and I was WRONG. The club is open by invitation only - but for the first 30 days the regular nomination procedure is NOT implemented.

When we set up the by-laws, they put the speed at 25 wpm - which means that either you have to be an expert's expert on the hand key, or you have to use a speed key (bug, sideswiper, or electronic keyer or keyboard). I was one of the minority that wanted the speed to be 17 wpm which is what FOC was (and perhaps still is).

The beginning of the club had it's rocky moments - unintentionally some of the founders of the club (including myself) were dropped from the email that sent out the notice. Also unfortunately we were not added to the names on the invitation, but we will be added in short order to the list of the founders.

For those who have been invited, we can always change the by laws to make an excellent hand key operator able to join. When I was younger, I thought "faster was better" until I saw some of the fabulous operators who used just a hand key. There was one fellow who worked for TRT's Slidell, Louisiana Radio (WNU) who month after month beat the fellows with the keyboards and electronic keyers in earning money for the station by passing traffic. He changed my opinion about hand key operators right away!

Yes, but what are the minimum standards? Is there a skill level that they are looking for?

A new club has been formed among Amateur Radio operators who are Morse Code
(CW) enthusiasts. It is called The CW Operators' Club (CWops). CWops
encourages the use of CW in Amateur communications, and it promotes goodwill
among Amateurs around the world by planned CW activities.
CWops is international in scope, membership and management. Its focus is
the use of CW, whether for contesting, DXing or ragchewing. Moreover, it
promotes every form of sending -- if it's CW, CWops supports it!
For further information, go to www.cwops.org. There you will find
everything that you might want to know about CWops, including our bylaws and
articles of incorporation, our planned activities, an explanation of how to
become a member, and a list of current members.
