Thanks to Gene for telling us about LibreOffice. I had not heard of them.
I am one of the developers of a distribution for the blind and visually
impaired called Vinux which is packaging Debian and Ubuntu versions of an
accessible Linux distribution. Thanks also to the others who have
participated in this lively but OT discussion. I did not know the download
was an old version but free is free. But now I know of LibreOffice. I hope
it continues to use GTK as you will learn below...
We use a Gnome package called ORCA as a screen reader and Sun former owner
of Java and OpenOffice paid the salary for a few developers who worked on
ORCA who were employees of Sun but part of their employment was to work on
accessibility so that ORCA could read for those who could not see or who saw
poorly. Right now we have a system with OpenOffice that can do anything a
person would want to do with a computer, but the applications must be made
with GTK - Gimp Tool Kit and not newer and perhaps better tools.
I am working on the Debian version of Vinux which is a command line
application which uses speakup and espeak to talk. We have some amateur
radio applications also that a blind ham could use to enjoy amateur radio.
One application which currently is broken was a ham log, DX cluster monitor,
rig control, psk and Morse modes. Hopefully that package will be fixed to
use current libraries which are needed for other more modern programs.
Sadly one of my favorite programs no longer works - it is elmo the mail
program. So now I am using mutt on command line.
